According to the European bioplastics Association, the global bioplastics production capacity is expected to increase from about 2.05 million tons / year in 2017 to about 2.44 million tons / year in 2022. Polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHAs) are the main driving forces for the rapid growth of global bioplastics production capacity.
With the transformation of the world economy to a low-carbon and circular economy, and the increased support for bioeconomy policies, consumers' awareness of sustainable products and packaging will continue to promote the increase of bioplastics demand. The global bioplastics market is expected to grow by 20% in the next five years.
The association pointed out that in 2017, about 56% of the global production capacity of bioplastics was bio based non biodegradable plastics, including Bio based polyethylene, bio based polyethylene terephthalate and bio based polyamide.
The packaging industry is still the largest application field of bioplastics, accounting for nearly 60% of the market demand in 2017.
Asia is the main production center of bioplastics, accounting for more than 50% of the market share. Europe accounts for 20% of production, but this proportion will rise to 25% by 2022.
